BEL Teams Up With Restore Belize For Scholarships
posted (May 25, 2016)

Every year, Restore Belize sources business partners to help fund four years of secondary school expenses for a number of underprivileged students. Today they signed a formal agreement with the Belize Electricity Limited, BEL, in which the electricity company is granting $36 thousand dollars to the "I AM Belize scholarship Program". The grant will provide tuition, books, and uniform for 9 new scholarship students for a period of four years.

We spoke with Restore Belize and the BEL representatives who signed the document. Here's what they told us about this new partnership.

Roger Bradley - Sr. Prog. Officer, RESTORE Belize
"What is happening is we are embarking on a partnership between RESTORE Belize and the Belize National Energy Charitable Trust to riase funds for another 4 years and this morning we really appreciate the assistance of the Belize Electricity Limited and this will enable 9 students to have an opportunity to complete their secondary education."

Vonetta Burrell - Communications Manager, BEL
"We were contacted by the organization and we were impressed with the way their scholarship programme is managed and also for the far reaching impact it has on our communities; children in communities that may not have had the opportunity to finish their high school education. So we're happy to be here today to provide a 4 year commitment at a total of 36,000 dollars."

Mary Vasquez - Director, RESTORE Belize
"You are a perfect example and I would say I hope a guiding light for the rest of the cooperate world in cooperate responsibility, in having cooperate Belize participate in alleviating and addressing some of our most critical social issues. Education really is the key to a productive and peaceful society that has been shown by research internationally and so this is was a very personal gift to all the students who will be receiving scholarships but it is also an overall important gift to our society as it is one of the most fundamental ways to promote peace and prosperity."

Since the inception of this scholarship program, Restore Belize has assisted over 200 students. 38 have since graduated, and another 12 are expected to complete the requirements for graduation this year.
