Belize In Washington DC To Talk Sarstoon Protocol
posted (June 20, 2016)
Tonight Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, Brigadier General David Jones and Ambassador Alexis Rosado are on their way to Washington DC for high level meetings tomorrow. They will meet with Guatemalan Foreign Minister Carlos Raul Morales, Guatemala's Commander of the Armed Forces, General Perez and Guatemalan Ambassador to Belize, Manuel Roland Barillas.

The meeting will be held tomorrow afternoon at the OAS Main building in downtown Washington DC.

The diplomats and senior military officers will discuss the Sarstoon mechanism - a plan to make certain that Belizean military and civilians enjoy full access to the north side of the Sarstoon without hindrance from the Guatemalan army.

It will be the second meeting for the Ambassadors and the Generals in five days. They met last week Thursday at the OAS Adjacency Zone Office in Benque Viejo. That is where - reports tell us - they agreed to allow Belizeans unhindered access to the north side of the river as an interim agreement until tomorrow when a more formal agreement can be arrived at in the Washington meeting.
