PUP Plans…
posted (June 22, 2016)

So what’s their fix for the setbacks in the relationship with Guatemala? Well, the PUP says that the best approach is to go back to the public and get a new mandate on how they want the Sarstoon situation handled.

Today when the media asked Courtenay if the PUP is considering going on their own international campaign, he said, that that’s certainly a good option. Here’s that back and forth:

Eamon Courtenay - PUP Representative
"The PUP has a very proud history of dealing with the Belize Guatemala issue before and after independence right; this idle thought that we feel hurt, that we feel disrespected and so we are pulling out like children. It is utter and complete nonsense. The reason that we have taken the position we have taken is because we fundamentally disagree with this approach of talk and hope and unless and until talk and hope is stopped in National Policy, we're not participating. And I am saying that we're going to go on an offensive to get that policy to change, to convince Belizeans that the policy has failed and we need a different strategy. So to answer your question, question of going to London, going to Washington, going to Istanbul is neither here nor there for us. We are more concerned with a real plan, a real strategy and a chance in the facts on the ground. If we can do that from home we would be happy but if we have to travel we are prepared to do it but we're only prepared to do it when we are prepared, we are ready, we have a strategy and we know what we are about. This talking and hoping and loving of Carlos Raul is over and done with as far we are concerned."

Additionally, the PUP suggests that, quote, “It is clear that Belize needs a full-time dedicated team working through a well-staffed secretariat, advised by international lawyers, to resolve the illegal control of the Sarstoon by Guatemala and the continued rape of the Chiquibul and degradation of our rivers and water resources.â€￾ End quote.
