Hon. Saldivar Speaks On City Crime
posted (June 22, 2016)

We also asked National Security Minister Saldivar about the spike in Belize District crime. Last week Friday, the crime climate was turned up way past 100 when a 15 year-old shooter went to kill a known gang figure right in of the Police Station. He ended up shooting a cop while trying to flee the scene. Today, Saldivar shared his thoughts on the incident with us:

Hon. John Saldivar - National Security Minister
"My first thoughts had to be to the persons who were injured to make sure that they were safe. Yes it was a brazen act, it tells us a lot about where our society has come in terms of these individuals but you know the police pursued and the police detained and I believe the police reaction was adequate and was able to contain the matter."

And speaking generally on the spike in violence in the Belize District, we asked him if he and his police management team are taking a close look at what happened. As viewers are aware, he’s criticized the media for sensationalizing crime in the news. Here’s what he had to say:

Hon. John Saldivar - National Security Minister
"We've had some spikes we know that the crime situation has its ups and its downs. Has its time when the crime spikes and we try to find out what are the underlining causes and try to address these causes and I do believe that the personnel that we have in the city at this time are working behind the scenes to try to deal with the conflicts that are causing these problems."
