Championing Competition
posted (June 22, 2016)

Competition is good! That’s the idea that the Ministry of Trade is trying to impress unto several key stakeholders. Today, the Ministry of Trade in collaboration with the CARICOM Secretariat organized a one day training workshop today to sensitize the public, the private sector, and the legal community about the benefits of competition and competition policies.

Dr. Leroy Almendarez - Director General, Foreign Trade
"The workshop focuses on competition policy and law. About 2 weeks ago on June 3rd we had a first sensitization it's pretty much sensitization, getting people to have some understanding if you want to put competition policy and law in place what are some of those requirements, what are some of the considerations that we must think about and so it engages the public sector and the private sector. So that any law, any law that comes into place it would mean that the private sector would have a voice in understanding what those requirements, what are the intentions of the legislation; you know the whole objectives of the legislation who will it benefit. As a matter of fact it will benefit producers and the consumer."

"What is the overall goal or the main take away from this workshop?"

Dr. Leroy Almendarez - Director General, Foreign Trade
"The main take away would be that if we had no understanding of what competition policy and law was all about before we came in that we'd have a much better understanding of what it is and appreciation of what it is and being able to not disengage but for example some of the misconceptions that probably exist is those misconceptions can be allayed, fears can be alleviation. But like I said it will require much more discussion because this is just the start in terms of discussion competition policy and law."
