Fire Follow-Up
posted (June 28, 2016)
Last night, we told you about the raging fire which destroyed 11 buildings, damaged another 6, and left 88 San Pedro Residents homeless. Well, as this photographs show, the authorities and the community have been working as quickly as they possibly can to clean up the block between Pescador Drive and Buccaneer Street.

It's been over 30 hours since the blaze destroyed the homes, and since then, support has been coming from local and international sources.

Smart donated $2,500 dollars cash and pledged to match all donations made by their customers who use their credit balance to simply text in how much they would want to contribute. That amount will then be deducted from their credit balance.

But, as we told you, the main relief effort on the ground is coming from the non-profit organizations on San Pedro. Yesterday, the Mayor told us how he and NEMO worked to organize them to maximize the recovery effort:

Daniel Guerrero - Mayor, San Pedro Town
"Material stuff, you can get it back, but life you can't. So, I am happy on that section. I personally called a meeting with all the different NGOs. Because we work together. We help them and they help us and so on. So I called all the NGOs this afternoon, just coming out from the office and we are putting work to each group, so we don't duplicate the work and we want to be on the same page at all times and the conference room, that's where NEMO is operating - it will be 24/7 for 3 days. So actually there are people that have not slept."

Carolina Kumul - San Pedro Lion's Club Secretary
"We have been opened from 9 in the morning, and we will try to be here as late as possible. We're opening tomorrow as well. We are going to be open for a few days for the public to come in."

Hon. Edmond Castro - Minister of NEMO
"Combined together, we should be able to pull ourselves up and it's amazing to see the type of different grassroots organizations that attended that meeting, who were volunteering and giving up their space in their hotels, providing food, warm hot meal for fire victims. So we got a cross section of volunteers who attended this meeting that will be assisting to ease the pain of those fire victims. So along with NEMO and the government of Belize, I think we should be able to be on top of things."
