The Statistical Institute of Belize issued a major tranche of figures today. Due to time contraints with a very loaded newscast tonigh twe can't go into them with the depth that we usually do, but just to give you a snapshot, here's what we can tell you.
First off, GDP growth was down 2% for the first quarter of 2016.That's a very negative indicator, since it was up 7% in the first quarter of 2015.
But there's good news for employment figures. A labour force survey conducted in April 2016, showed the lowed unemployment figures in almost 10 years. Unemployment was 8% in April of 2016, down form 10% in April 2015.Unemployment has been trending down from April of 2012 when it was 14%.
And, inflation in May increased by 1%, meaning goods cost 1% more this year than they did a year ago. We'll have a more detailed breakdown in tomorrow's‚ news.
