For decades visitors travelling from Europe to Belize have run into a hurdle. To get here they have to spend an overnight in Miami or Houston, or Newark, Cancun or any of the other US hubs connecting to Belize. But American Airlines says they are changing that with a new flight that launches in November from Heathrow Airport on London. It doesn't fly directly from London to Belize - but the new afternoon flights departing from London Heathrow will have a few hours' connection in Miami onto Belize City. We stress, it is not a direct flight, and anyone who's travelled knows that with flight delays, and long TSA lines, a few hours for connection is often not enough. We're told that the PGIA may also have to activate an extended hours operation at the PGIA - which is also not a sure thing.
Nonetheless, the flight launches on 4th November 2016, to coincide with Belize's tourism season. It will operate four days a week on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
According to a press release, in 2015, Belize saw over twelve thousand UK visitors - an 11.4% increase from the previous year.
Reports also tell us that American Airlines will be changing the types of airplanes used from Miami to Belize opting instead for smaller American Eagle jets which will carry fewer passengers but travel with greater frequency.
