Mayor: Don’t Know Jack About Joe
posted (July 13, 2016)

Yesterday we told about the “Joeâ€￾ situation in the Belize City Council. Now, we aren’t talking about any average Joe, we mean Joe Bradley, UDP mouth piece and City Council employee, under his son, Mayor Darrell Bradley.

Bradley works in the City's PR department, but he could be in a disciplinary pickle because, according to reports, he berated and threatened the City Engineer.

We understand that a disciplinary complaint was made by the City Engineer but when we asked the Mayor about this today he told us he told us he learned of it on the news:…

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor
"In relation to any disciplinary hearing that's not something that comes to my desk and it's not anything that I would have direct knowledge of or involvement in. Actually I became aware of that issue because I saw it on Channel 7's news last night much to my surprize."

Emanuel Pech
"But I mean you must be keeping tabs on the doing of the..."

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor
"I do not keep tabs of any staff, no. Human resource is not something that the mayor is involved in. One of the reasons why we created a human resource regulation is to depoliticize any kind of hiring or any kind of firing; so that we set up a disciplinary committee that has technical staff on the disciplinary committee and they deal with any matters in relation to discipline. If a complaint is made to staff that's treated as a confidential thing so I don't even know how if there was a complaint how that would be released out to the media and that is investigated by staff. I don't get any reports in relation to anything that is mentioned by any staff. They make a determination and then the staff in terms of the HR, the HR manager and so forth they would make a determination in relation to what they do, that doesn't come to the mayor's office."

Emanuel Pech
"But I mean we are not talking about any ordinary employee we're talking about Mr. Bradley your father."

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor
"We are speaking of an ordinary employee. Every single person at the Belize City Council is treated fairly. One thing that people will expect from me and they will get from me is justice. Because my father works here, he is given no additional or extra treatment."

Emanuel Pech
"But I mean if he's any ordinary employee as you say and if the allegation had any merit to it and he did berate and threaten the city engineer; should he be dismissed?"

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor
"I don't know. I don't know what happened..."

Emanuel Pech
"If there is any truth to it.."

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor
"But I don't know. I don't know what happened, I don't know if a complaint was made, I don't know the circumstances in relation to any complaint. That is not something that comes to the major's attention."

Emanuel Pech
"Since learning about it have you taken it upon yourself not in your official capacity but in your personal capacity to ask what went on?"

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor
"But why would I?"

Emanuel Pech
"He's your father sir."

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor
"No, my father is my father. I love my father; my father has honoured me throughout my entire life. In relation to discharging my functions as mayor I make it sure that we are as transparent as possible in our discharge. My father according to my understanding does a good job, I have worked in relation to certain projects in city council and he works in the PR department and we have worked on those projects in relation to public relations; my opinion from a purely 3rd party kind of relationship not the fact that; because I don't supervise him, I'm not his manager. My observation is that he does a good job."

So, still no clarity on the matter. But whatever the case may be Mayor Darrell Bradley asserts that no special privilege will be granted to his father even if that means Joe Bradley has to go before a disciplinary hearing. But, those inside the council, tell us don't hold your breath.
