Hurricane Earl Was Stronger Than Advertised
posted (August 4, 2016)
Hurricane Earl ripped through Belize last night into this morning - and today, thousands of Belizeans are recovering from major loss or damage to property, and a very traumatic night of being rattled by the storm.

Earl defied every prediction - when it's eye wobbled again just before landfall, and landed just south of Belize City. The strongest winds were north of that point, and so Belize city and Belize rural were hammered with winds said to be 75 to 80 miles per hour, but which felt like 90 to one hundred miles per hour.

Today at a press conference, the Prime Minister commented on the colossal storm:...

Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"Ahhh that storm was a monster. It certainly seemed that way to all of us. There is some dispute as to whether the maximum sustain winds did not in fact significantly exceed the 75 miles per hour we had been told to expect and the Chief Met Officer is saying he's yet to gather all the data. But he as has his own suspicion feeling that in fact it was closer to 90 plus miles per hour. Godwin Hulse says no, he will insist that it was 100. Anyway, we have survived, even if barely and I would want to begin by saying that as of 11:30 -12:30 when we concluded our internal meeting in preparation to come and talk to you this afternoon, no casualty, no loss of life was reported."

Hon. Edmond Castro, NEMO Minister
"I have never experienced a hurricane that lasted so long, pounding and pounding for hours. Each time it tend to raise you roof, you say well maybe this is the last one now and it keep on going for about 3,4-5 hours. Man, it tired you out."
