US Ambassador says OAS Investigation In Child Shooting Finished
posted (August 19, 2016)
A month ago, we told you that Both Belize and Guatemala requested that the OAS investigate the BDF's fatal shooting of 13 year-old Guatemalan Julio Rene Alvarado. That's the shooting which the Guatemalan Government condemned as murder, but which the BDF maintains was self defence, since they were fired upon inside the Chiquibul, under the cover of darkness.

The Mexican Government dispatched a highly trained forensics specialist to make up a part of the OAS's independent investigation team. So, did the US Government, and today when the media asked US Ambassador Carlos Moreno about it today, he said that he understands that the investigation is complete.

He said that it is for the OAS to decide when to disclose the results to the two Governments after the formal report is completed:

Reporter
"I recalled hearing that the US was supposed to provide some technical assistance to be a part of the OAS investigation. Did the US provide any officials to be a part of that, investigators?"

Carlos Moreno, US Ambassador to Belize
"Yes we did, we provided one investigator."

Reporter
"Would you as the Ambassador be kept up to date as to what happens there? The Prime Minister has said that he's informed the investigation is almost complete."

Carlos Moreno, US Ambassador to Belize
"Yes, that much I can say. I don't know if the report been issued yet, it's a joint report by Mexican forensic expert and the US expert. I would leave it to the OAS to decide when and where they want to release that investigative report."

We'll let you know the result of that report as soon as we find out.
