PM Won't Sign Corruption Convention
posted (August 25, 2016)
Now earlier you heard the Prime Minister say he needs more than what he explained as a "suggestion of corruption". But if one pores over the 700 plus pages of the audits on passports, visas, and nationality certificates between 2011 and 2013, there's more than a suggestion - there's what appears to be clear and consistent evidence of wrongdoing.

And that's the kind of thing that the UN is trying to reduce through its Convention Against Corruption. It is the same convention that the Belize Progressive Party and recently the Belize Chamber of Commerce has been trying to convince the government to sign on to. Today the PM outlined why he has not, and does not plan to sign on.

In its most recent appeal in favour of the Convention, the Belize Chamber of Commerce insists that the Convention requires cooperation of Governments in major areas of prevention, asset recovery, structure of public sector and financial reporting.
