A young, pregnant mother was shot and killed in Orange Walk Town last night. 22 year old Jahida Briceno was at home with her family last night around 7:00 when a visitor called out for her. Jahida came out to see who it was and instead of a friendly greeting, she was hit with 2 gunshots. It was an execution of the rarest kind – because killers don’t usually target women, particularly a mother of two with one on the way.  We travelled to Orange Walk today to find out more about this ruthless murder.

Jahida Briceno lived here with her 2 children and her father.

She brought her dad to live with her in June after he had injured his leg in an accident, leaving him unable to walk.

They all lived comfortably together here at their Boundary Road home. But everything changed last night when Jahida was lured out of the house to her death. Her father gave us the shocking account off camera.

"She was making tea for her kids when someone came and holler for her that's when I was in my room. When I see she pass my room and went and I heard 2 shots. I couldn't move because I can't walk. She was my baby (crying...)."

"So when you heard the shots what ran through your mind, what happened thereafter?"

"I tried to come out but I couldn't, I was in the wheelchair and I feel. My 2 grand kids were in the kitchen and they holler grandpa. I told them come in because I don't know if they would come in and shot us as well. So I locked the door. Couple minutes I open the door and see my daughter lying down, she was not dead at the moment. She was looking at me but I couldn't help her, I couldn't move."

Jahida was shot in the face when she came out on the veranda to see who was calling her. She then turned to run into the house but the gunman shot her in the back. She collapsed in the living room in front of her children.

It is a shock to the family that someone would want this young mother dead.

Jahida’s aunt told us she didn’t know of any problems Jahida had with anyone expected with her children’s father.

"She never had complaints not that I know of. The only one I've heard was some disagreement that the dad for the children that she was taking to court for maintenance had some argument with her on Monday. He wanted her to drop the case and she said no because he has not given her any money for two years. That's the only thing I've heard."

But the police can’t confirm at this point if that disagreement led to Jahida’s murder.

So right now there are no answers as to why Jahida was executed at her home, the only thing the family has is grief and agony. But what intensifies the pain is that the family lost two lives last night.

"I didn't know until afterwards when I was outside one of her best friend and told me she was pregnant.  I didn’t know."

And no one will ever know what that unborn baby would have looked like or who he or she would have grown up to be nor if Jahida would have taught her child how to play softball as well as she did. Her aunt told us that what she knows for sure is that nobody can ever replace Jahida as their team’s star catcher.

"I was the pitcher for my team and she was the catcher and we played well together. We played a lot of games she did excellent; I was really surprised that she turned out to be a good catcher because that is one of the hardest spots. You can find players for any position except that one and seeing her lying there last night, that is such a waste; a young person talented....just gaan."

Jahida leaves behind a 5 year old son and a 7 year old daughter. She was 2 months pregnant.
