Conflict In the Catholic Church And Schools
posted (September 30, 2016)
Last night we told you about the explosive release from the Catholic Diocese -presumably under the hand of Bishop Dorrick Wright - standing by the striking teachers and taking a few well-placed jabs at the government. Well, the Manager of Roman Catholic Schools put them in check when she told LOVE TV that the release was not in line with the official position of Catholic Schools. Here's how she put it.

As Sister Barbara explained - she called in the Papal Nunce from Honduras to come and clear up the matter. And while the Diocese release stated that the 50 thousand children in the Catholic school System should stay home on Monday and wait for further order, the school manager said that they want to keep schools open:

Yesterday, Sister Barbara also sent out a letter to Principals and teachers of catholic public schools saying quote, "Please be informed that the Papal Nuncio to Belize, Archbishop Leon Kalenga has stated that the diocese of Belize City and Belmopan is not in support of the impending BNTU strike. She informs them that schools will remain open as scheduled, and buses will function as normal."

And while that is Sister Barbara's advise as General Manager, another Catholic organization came forward today - seemingly in an attempt to gently set the sister straight. It's called the Belize Catholic Association of Principals of Secondary Schools and their release says they met with Bishop Dorick Wright on Wednesday and, quote, "on the matter of the impending strike, the Bishop indicated his concern for the safety of students during a strike." It continues, quote, "he informed us that a press release would be issued urging parents to be mindful of this aspect."

The release stresses that Wright is the head of the Catholic Church in Belize, and quote, "we regret that the General Manager of the Catholic Public Schools was not informed."
