Six flaming tyres formed a line across the highway at mile 11. In terms of tyre fire pyres, we've seen better, but, still, it must have been quite a sight for the cargo trucks drivers who commute in the pre dawn hours to find this across the road.

It blocked traffic for more than half an hour and this was the scene at 4:45 am when the fire truck from Dangriga arrived and put out the fire in, ah…just about…15 seconds?

The smoky sodium haze provided the end of this little scene. 6 miles north, at mile 18 it was even less dramatic where there only four tires were lined across the road, and it was over even more quickly - the fire man had no trouble - it was a one man, one hose operation.

In the view of the dawn's early light though - the highway was blackened and still smoldering an hour later, and according to the fire department, the high temperatures could structurally weaken the approach to the concrete bridge - which has been standing for at least a century.

But security-wise - it's strengthened, because a police officer is now posted at the site.

At mile 18, traffic whizzed past oblivious to what had happened there just a short time earlier, and the fire truck returned to its post.

These tire wires and rubber remnants will be here for a while - The fire department tells us they were truck or bus tyres, but 6 of them could hardly span the road.

And life in the valley went on as usual. The Dangriga Fire station had to reposed with its one road worthy truck, because the fire station in Pomona has been closed since the fire truck - caught on fire.

So the fire starters did strike at a weak spot - but they also struck with a weak blow.

There are reports that there was another tyre fire near Swasey Bridgeon the Southern Highway. No word on whether there are suspects for these fires.
