Time For “Time And The River”?
posted (October 11, 2016)
Celebrated Belizean author Zee Edgell released her book "Time and The River" in 2007. It is the story of slavery, rebellions, manumission and the complicated politics of love between slave and master. If all that wasn't enough, it tackles another thorny issue: freed blacks owning their own slaves. It makes for a complex cocktail of what is called a neo-slave narrative, and perhaps all that attributed to the book being a commercial flop. In the words of author Zee Edgell, "it just fell" and that's part of the reason she had a sort of re-launch today in connection with the "enSlaved" exhibition now ongoing at the Museum of Belize. She spoke to us about the book's complex commingling of history and fictional narrative today:
"Time and the River" is Edgell's fourth and most recent novel. It took 10 years to write and research. Autographed copies are available through the Museum of Belize directly: 223-4524.
