Oceana To PM: What Happened The Offshore Oil Referendum Promise?

The Northern Explorer, the ship which started seismic survey work off the Belizean coast, was sent packing last week. And due to public outcry, seismic surveys in Belizean waters have been halted. Even though, the environmental community was instrumental to this outcome with their whistleblowing efforts, they say that they are still waiting for answers. In a press release sent out today, the Coalition to Save Our Natural Heritage restated their request for the establishment of legislation to ban offshore oil exploration in Belizean waters, as well as their appeal to hold a referendum. We spoke to members of the Coalition today about their concerns, here's what they had to say…

some of these issues. In 2015, we spoke to the Prime Minister about official legislating the moratorium on offshore oil exploration, and asked him about the possibility of an official referendum as far back as 2012, here's what he had to say then…

The Coalition also insists that the government release information connected to the seismic surveys and the multi beam, including contracts and agreements the government made with the exploration company, TGS.
