BEL Sends Linesmen To Assist In Bahamas Hurricane Recovery
posted (October 27, 2016)
Almost a month ago today Hurricane Matthew, one of the most powerful storms in the last decade, formed and went on to tear through the Caribbean. The Bahamas was one of the hardest hit, its 700 islands taking a straight hit from the storm as a category three and four. The Bahamas Power and Light Company reported that 80% of their customers lost power as a result of damages sustained to their electrical power network.

The BPL contacted the Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation, an association of electric utility providers from around the Caribbean, for help. CARILEC then mobilized a team of 35 linemen from 7 of its member countries, including Jamaica, Barbados and Belize.

A 7 man team from BEL has been sent to the Bahamas to assist in rebuilding and reconnecting the electrical service lines in New Providence and the Family Islands. The BEL team has joined the line crews to rebuild the high voltage network and low voltage service lines in those areas. The employees are Jessie Martinez, George Neal, Rodney Baird, Faron Flores, Ronald Young, Paul McCalla and Brian Gentle.
