Coalition Calls Out GOB

Government has made it official that it won't put legislation in place to confirm the referendum on offshore drilling. The Belize Coalition to save Our Natural Heritage says that won't do - because they say policy can change overnight.

It all goes back to 2015, when OCEANA and the Coalition to Save Our Natural Heritage submitted a draft bill outlining the requirements that needed to be met in order to lift the moratorium on offshore oil exploration. While the government acknowledges the submission of the draft, in a letter to OCEANA, it notes that it never asked for a bill. So, rather than making all the Coalition's requirements legislation, the Government has decided to maintain the policy-based moratorium which will only be lifted if three of the Coalition's stipulations are met.
