US Ambassador Moreno Closely Monitored Election Night
posted (November 9, 2016)

And while PM Barrow had the bird’s eye view from the media capital of the USA, our 7News team got a chance to take in the election coverage from the US Embassy in Belmopan.  The US Ambassador threw a big party with a huge invitation list at his residence. Here’s what we saw:…

The party had all the political paraphernalia you might expect, and a big screen with a viewing hall to watch the results come in.

H.E Carlos Moreno - US Ambassador
"I haven't paid complete attention tonight but from the small bits of results that I've seen its closer than I anticipated."

Jules Vasquez
"Now you're a democrat are you nervous?"

H.E Carlos Moreno - US Ambassador
"I'm for a fair process, I'm for democracy, I have been appointed by democrats."

The democratic candidate Hillary Clinton was defeated - but when we spoke to him before the outcome - he was even tempered, or maybe we can say, diplomatic:

Jules Vasquez
"You're in festive mood but it's a tense night. Explain to me what your feelings are right now."

H.E Carlos Moreno - US Ambassador
"My feelings are right now that it's exciting to see the election results come in and I think that ultimately the process will display the democracy will win."

But, early on, the Ambassador didn’t seem very bothered by the progress of the election – he was on the dancefloor strutting to the Village people:

Jules Vasquez
"Ambassador, where did you learn to dance like that?"

H.E Carlos Moreno - US Ambassador
"In the Barrio (smiles)."

And while it surely wasn’t Moreno’s last dance, we’re not likely to see another son of Mexican immigrants as Ambassador in Mr. Trump’s America. But Moreno was upbeat about any changes in foreign policy:

Jules Vasquez
"What sort of changes do you think will occur?"

H.E Carlos Moreno - US Ambassador
"I really can't predict what either new administration might do but I think Belizeans can rest confidently that the partnership and friendship between the two governments and between the two peoples will continue as it has for the last 35 years of Belize's existence."

The party finished at 10:00 when there was still some flicker of hope for Hilary Clinton, who conceded after midnight Belize time.
