Ladyville Family of Five Homeless After Fire
posted (November 28, 2016)
We turn now to the third fire this weekend in the Belize District. This one has left a single mother and her 4 children homeless.

It happened at around 7:30 on Friday night in the Japan area of Ladyville. That's when Delvorine Reyes's home caught fire, and was quickly destroyed - leaving the mother and her four children homeless.

Now, the Ladyville Fire Station is just down the road, but their proximity didn't make a difference for this family. They weren't at home when the fire started and returned to find everything gone.

Their neighbor Marie Gongora was the first to see the fire:

Marie Gongora, Next Door Neighbour
"I was sitting down by the window and then my daughter and I was in the shop and I told her that I smell varnish burning and I look around in and out of my house and I stayed there sitting and a little while after I saw my neighbor two children went to my sister and I look out through the window I saw smoke coming out and I ran out and said Carol, Delvorine house is burning and I shouted Brian and Melissa, you mom's house is burning, come. I shouted at the neighbor saying 'fire burn, help' and then I ran go towards the house and my grandson said no granny, a gas tank is in the house and then told the neighbor to call the fire truck to come. The fire truck came, but it was too late. She lose everything, no bed, no clothes - nothing. I wish and I beg everyone to help her, because she is a single mother just like me. From the time I know her, she is a good neighbor to me, because she looks out for me too. We as people should have love and look out for the neighbor. When I am not at home, I somebody should look and I look at everyone, not only by fire, by thieves. Nowadays, to me seems like love does not exist - they get cold. I wish for help for her. If I could build a house for her, I would already build it for her."

Despite this personal disaster, Delvorine Reyes still reported for work today she normally does. Her neighbor hopes that the NEMO officials will see the plight of this family, and step in to get them some form of relief.
