Fancy (And Tiny) New Street Sweeper
posted (December 15, 2016)
Today the streets of Belize City were introduced to a new method of maintenance. A brand new street sweeper was unloaded on Chetumal Street, where we caught a few operators demonstrating its capabilities. We also met Councilor Phillip Willoughby observing the demonstration and he gave us some information about the sweeper, and some other equipment that arrived along with it...

Phillip Willoughby - Councilor responsible for Flood mitigation
"This is one of 5 equipment that has come courtesy the Flood Mitigation Project, granted by the government of Belize through IDB for the Flood Mitigation infrastructure improvement project for Belize City. The four other equipment that we'll be getting are a back hose a roller, a vacuum truck and an asphalt truck. We have in country four of the equipment thus far and the other will be arriving shorty which is the asphalt truck."

"Now sir, we've seen this machine sweep up some of the debris that was on the street. Where should we except to see this in the City."

Phillip Willoughby
"Well most of our concreted streets, and paved streets you will see this one piece of equipment performing its duty in serving the city."

Alex Courtenay, 7News
"Sir, we know that sometimes after carnival or so on, the streets have a lot of debris and garbage. Is this where we can expect to see this working the most."

Phillip Willoughby
"No, you'll see this across the city in locations coordinated and planned by the flood mitigation and sanitation department. It's not limited or specifically tied to one specific function or event. You will see this piece of equipment across the city."

The sweeper will assist in flood mitigation by clearing dirt out of the street and preventing it from building up in drainage pipes. It is one of five other vehicles that will be used to maintain the Flood Mitigation Project.
