posted (December 20, 2016)
Well, the shopping sprees continued this afternoon in the city, followed by our favorite: Secret Santa on a bus. That's where commuters get hauled off the bus about some mystery complaint, and then learn that Secret Santa is gonnna make their day. Alex Courtenay was there for the afternoon session:...

This afternoon's giveaway was held in two sections. The first was $300 shopping spree at Publics in Belize City, but there was a catch. The winner had no idea it was coming.

"When the police showed up a while ago, what were you thinking?"

Dawn Faber - Shopping Spree Winner
"I wanted to know who made a complaint about me because I didn't harass anybody from I know myself. When I got in this place I started to cry because I said 'mien who made a complaint against me when I know I'm no kind of problem'."

Reporter
"Okay but it turns out they wanted to do something else for you, can you tell us what that is?"

Dawn Faber - Shopping Spree Winner
"Yes they told me I can pick $300 worth of stuff for Christmas and I thanked them very much because the kids I'm taking care of are needy children. So I thanked them very much."

ACP Chester Williams - Commander of Southside Police
"Yes we had to find a way to get her to Publics and so we had to make up a story and tell her that there's a complaint made against her and the person works at Publics so we need to bring her here to confront the person. When we got here that's when we broke the news to her that the complaint was that she was to get $300 worth of groceries to help her over the Christmas period. I could have seen the joy in her face when that was told to her."

But the activities didn't end there. The police soon moved on to the Philip Goldson Highway, where a bus search served as a disguise for more gift giving.

ACP Edward Broaster - OC, Eastern Division Rural
"Well the thing is all about excitement. We want to surprise them indeed; we didn't want to be like 'hey here's $100'. So we tried to go as far to edge as possible to kind of get them thinking something else other than they're going to be rewarded with $100."

And the excitement was taking select passengers off the bus and telling them a complaint had been made against them.

And of course the initial fear and frustration quickly turned into votes of thanks as the passengers made their way back on the bus, ready to enjoy their little extra for the Christmas.
