The Elections Mess At NTUCB
posted (December 22, 2016)
This weekend, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize held its Annual General Meeting to elect a new executive.

After the election, incumbent Marvin Mora was re-elected in an overwhelming majority. The problem is that the by-laws do not allow for a union member to be elected to office more than 2 times.

Before being elected in early January 2015, Mora served as the 2nd Vice President under Dylan Reneau's Leadership. So, with those two elected terms under his belt, he was ineligible to serve a third term, but it appears that no one checked the NTUCB's by-laws, and so he participated in the elections, and he was duly elected. But, unfortunately, he cannot serve a third term. This afternoon, he told us what happened, and why he must step aside and allow the newly elected 1st Vice President to lead the NTUCB:

Marvin Mora, Former President, NTUCB
"That is a section that deals with the amount of times an executive can run for office of the congress. Unfortunately for me, nobody remembered that I had ran 3 times. So, we went through the entire process of elections, somebody was nominated to run for the same post. We went into elections for my post as president again and I was elected again 47 votes to 8 votes. That showed a lot of confidence from the congress on the work that I've done so far not only to keep the congress together but to make the right decisions for the congress at the time I've served there. So, I first want to thank everybody who had supported me before and then. I also want to make it emphatically clear that the congress is alive and is well. We may have our internal issues but the congress right now is in a better position that it was many years ago. I think right now the congress can do a lot of work, needs to do a lot of work and I think everything now is incumbent on whosoever is going to be running the congress. Unfortunately, the next day I was informed about the section and it basically included me. I called a meeting and the congress convened a meeting last night at Kut Avenue and went over the details. For me it was a bittersweet situation because even though I won, basically everybody gave me their support, I could not stay on the post because of what the actual section that deals with it says. In my view and in the view of many people that are there, what it does is it handstrongs the congress from holding on to experience and talent. It actually does not allow the nurturing of trade union leaders to come up through the ranks as well."

Jackie Willoughby, who was called to the bar less than a week ago, is the 1st Vice President of the NTUCB, and she will lead the umbrella union until an extraordinary general meeting is called in 2 months. That's when a bi-election will be held to decide who the new President will be.
