Senior Citizen Fought Off Armed Attackers
posted (December 29, 2016)
Henry Bulwer has been selling fruits at the corner of West Collet Canal and Raccoon Streets for the last six years. But last night the 73 year old had to fend off two armed attackers. They demanded that he turn over his money, but instead of handing over his day's earnings, Bulwer decided to fight back. He told us how.

Henry Bulwer, Fruit Vendor
"I was about to close in just as a lady came to buy something from me, meanwhile I went inside to carry on putting up my stuff. Two man approached me directly with guns and said 'give me the money'. I wasn't consistent with that when he said 'give me the money' I decided that they won't get any money. So we started talking to him meanwhile but he looked like he was about to shoot so I aggressed him and they continued on tasseling with me. I told him 'I have no money' then I decided I was going to call for the police. There was a tassel between me and him and a young man who was out there too helping me, he moved off because he saw a gun. I got my elbow and shoulder hurt and that was part of what really happened there."

"When two men come after you with two guns, why did you decide to fight back instead of giving them what they wanted?"

Henry Bulwer, Fruit Vendor
"Because that's what most people are doing, I work hard for what I have. It's like a man that's studying to be a doctor or mechanic, nobody's going to take that away from him. These thugs aren't going to take it away from me. They can't stop me from what I'm doing. I will change my hours yes, because I see how the time is but then I'm willing to die if possible. I wasn't going to run in and get any money for them."

Alex Courtenay, 7News
"Sir where do you think you got the strength from to be able to fight off these two men?"

Henry Bulwer, Fruit Vendor
"Well, I look at those kids as their grandparents. I look at them to being able to suppose to handle me with respect. So there's not a fear because they're cowards. A man that isn't coward goes to work not try to hustle. They don't know how much money I make; they don't know what I have. They're looking to sleep in the day and come to hustle in the night. I didn't give up on them, when my time come, my destiny come for me to die, God will take me home but not like that."

One of the assailants, Stanley Moore, was captured by police last night. Moore, who was release on bail just two weeks ago, appeared in the Magistrate's Court today. He pled not guilty to charges of attempted robbery and wounding but was denied bail because the offences were committed with a firearm. Moore was remanded into custody until March of next year.
