47 Year Old Killed – Is It Because He Was A Gangster’s Uncle?
posted (January 4, 2017)

47 year old Bert Abraham is the 6th murder victim since Saturday. He was gunned down in front of his Holy Emmanuel Street home last night around 7:30. We were the first on the scene and we had shown you a few pictures during our newscast. Tonight we have more details. I spoke to his older sister to try and find out why Abraham was targeted:

There was never a dull moment when Bert Abraham was around, he would always be blasting music and putting on a show for whoever would watch him dance.

But last night, there were no dancehall rhythms to jam to only the deep crackle of the police radio as it came alive

And dreaded sobs and whispers among loved ones

Abraham was shot several times in front of his house as he was stashing his weed after a sale.

Voice of Karen Smith - Sister
"I only can say, I don’t know what happened, I won’t lie, a boy came to buy and he sold the boy and when he went to put up his thing, a blue vehicle came and bumped into a dog, when it bumped into the dog, the vehicle stopped and the dog ran and then the vehicle sped off and then I heard shots started to ring when the vehicle sped off then I started to shout for my brother and when I looked, I saw him down on the ground and when I saw him on the ground, I just jumped over him and  went out on the street for help."

Abraham’s sister says she didn’t see the shooter but whoever it was, unjustly took her brother’s life.

Voice of Karen Smith - Sister
"I know they chance my brother big time, because he does not gang bang, all he does is sell his weed and make his money and hustle his girls, he is not into that, they chanced him."

So why was Abraham targeted? Smith says he isn’t involved in any gangs but his nephew, Smith’s son, Brandon “Batteryâ€￾ Smith is a well-known street figure,

Courtney Weatherburne
"You think it is because of battery your brother was targeted for some reason because maybe he is related to battery?"

Voice of Karen Smith - Sister
"Well I don’t know, I don’t know if my son was involved in anything recently but like they say, if you can’t catch Harry you catch his shirt but they got the shirt because he is not into that type of move."

But regardless of the reason behind her brother’s killing, Smith has to accept his death –with only the memories and his favourite radio.

Voice of Karen Smith - Sister
"Sometimes we argue but we make up sweet before the end of the day, sometimes it is good, sometimes it is bad but that is my little brother and I love him and before the day is over we get back together."

Abraham leaves behind an 8 year old daughter. Today, Southside police declined comment on his murder – but we do know that mediation efforts are underway to calm tensions between rival gangs in the area. We’ll keep following the story.
