Chetumal Returns to Normal
posted (January 9, 2017)
After one night of ruction on Thursday January fifth, Chetumal was back to normal this weekend. News reports from the Quintana Roo capital say that 32 businesses were damaged, most of them drug stores. And the drug stores were targeted because most businesses had closed early on Thursday due to riots in other parts of Mexico.

56 persons were detained in Chetumal and 11 - including one woman - are expected to be charged.

But there have been no incidences of vandalism or unrest reported in Chetumal since early Fridaty morning.

State police however are keeping a high and visible profile in the shopping malls and on Avenida Heroes (E-RO-ES). Police can be seen guarding department stores and main streets.

Other businesses that were damaged by the vandalism have remained shuttered - and some have even welded those shutters closed while repairs are underway. Chetumal finished up its Tres Reyes holiday on Sunday - which is usually a time of major sales.
