Chicki Blue and The Chinese Restaurant Owner
posted (January 9, 2017)
Wilfred "Chicky Blue" Nicholas, rose to fame as part of the Penta-Lakers basketball team as an elite-semi-pro baller. But tonight he's making the news after he got into a scuffle with the son of a Chinese restaurant-owner. That ended when the man chopped him in the head with what could have been either a machete or a meat cleaver.

It happened on Friday night after the Green Jade Restaurant was closing. Nicholas and his family were celebrating an annual memorial for his deceased step-son who was killed in 2009.

He went to the restaurant to buy food for his grandchildren, but Green Jade was closing for the night. The Chinese business owners say that they tried to turn him away, but he refused to leave, insisting in an aggressive manner that he be served. They say that he was trespassing.

He, on the other hand, says that the Chinese restaurateurs disrespected him and shoved him, which led to the scuffle. Today, we spoke to his wife who was outraged the behavior of the business owner, who could have seriously injured Nicholas, or worse.

Lois Herrera - Nicholas - Wife of "Chicki Blue"
"We were home here, having the memorial - remembering for BJ, when suddenly, my next son, came and shouted, 'Mom, mom, come right now. Blue is covered in blood'. When I went out there, I saw my husband drenched in blood. When I got out there, I was asking what happened. He explained to me that he wanted to go into the Chinese shop to buy, and the Chinese looked like they were closing. He opened the grill door, and he stepped in, and when he stepped in, the Chinese boy pushed him, and he pushed back, and its then that the man came from behind - THE FATHER - and chopped Blue in the head, my husband - in his head. My husband is "Chicky Blue" Nicholas. Everybody knows my husband. My husband is a law abiding citizen. My husband is not those kind of people who are aggressive. That Chinese boy knows us."

"We always go and buy there. It's not like they don't know us, so why did they have to go and do my husband that? And, that's the thing that hurts me. Why? They shouldn't have done that at all."

"But, is it because my husband have dreads, or because he is black and has dreads, that's why they will do that to my husband? No man, you don't that kind of thing to people."

Fortunately, the weapon didn't cut too deep into Nicholas' scalp, but it did shear off 4 of his dreadlocks. He had to receive stitches, and he has made a report demanding court action.

The Chinese business owners, we understand, have made a counter complaint, saying that he aggressed them, and he was trespassing when they tried to get him to leave. So, today, we caught up with Chicky Blue himself to ask about that. Here's what he said:

Daniel Ortiz, 7News
"There are eyewitnesses who say that you aggressed this gentleman, this young man. Did you in anyway continue the fight, maybe he started it but you continued it?"

"No, after they parted us, I walked on the street, the police men they came, and they asked me if I wanted to go to the hospital. I told them yes, and they took me, and that was it."

Daniel Ortiz
"No, but I mean when you were trying to get into the restaurant, and he shoved you, did you in any kind of way tried to get away from that, because people said, that is when you aggressed him, and that is how you all ended up in the fight."

Wilfred "Chicky Blue" Nicholas
"No, I was walking, because the restaurant has a little one step. As I got up there, the man just pushed me off balance, and I am losing my balance. And I just hit him back, and that's when we tussled, one quick thing. After that, I remember I am on the ground, and I felt someone hitting me in my head. When I looked up, I saw that it was his father or somebody is holding him. Then a guy held me and told me to calm down, and I was calming down. He and I walked on the road side. He was telling me that - I think he told me that he is a police officer or something like that. But, I was there listening to the man, because I am a man of reason. I am no violence man, but if violence come to me, I will take care of myself the same way."

Daniel Ortiz
"In hindsight, would you have approached the situation differently?"

Wilfred "Chicky Blue" Nicholas
"Yeah, but I said that I did not go there to attack - If I went there to attack him, maybe you would have had me for murder or something, but I am not an aggressive man."

The Herrera-Nicholas Family is upset by what they say is preferential treatment that Ladyville police is affording to the Chinese business owners over them. We did speak with the business owner who declined comment. And Rural police, of course, are under a gag order.
