One Year Old Falls To Death In Well
posted (January 30, 2017)
A Maya Mopan mother of 6 lost her youngest child over the weekend. Lorena Durantes's 1 year 6 month old son died after he fell in their back yard well on Saturday afternoon around 12:00.

It was just another Saturday for the family as they washed their clothes and cooked lunch. Little Edwin was with the busy crowd of adults in the yard but his mother told us that she didn't even realize when he slipped away from them.

It's only until she and her mother in law found the boy face up in the well struggling to breathe. That gave the family hope but when they rushed him to the hospital, the water had already filled his lungs and there was nothing more that could be done. Today Durantes spoke to Courtney Weatherburne about the tragic incident. Our news team also spoke to Edwin's aunt at their Maya Mopan house.

Lorena Durantes, Mother, Edwin Duarte
"Saturday morning I was pining out clothes, I was washing, all of us were at the back of the house, his grandfather was cooking, my mother in law was helping me take care of him and I bathe him, I changed him and I fed him."

"When I was going to go pin out on the line by the front, my mother in law said he followed us and when he followed us he went to play with his other cousins and uncle and from there when I came back and told my mother in law I need 2 buckets of water, we knew my little baby was playing in the front and we don't know which way he went if it was through…he didn't go where my mother in law and the others were."

Courtney Weatherburne, 7News
"Because you all would have seen him pass to go to the well."

Lorena Durantes, Mother, Edwin Duarte
"Yes we would have seen him pass the well but it looked like he went all the way to the other side of the house so its until my mother in law called me and told her husband, "Babe, the baby the baby! And at the same time, I ran , I threw the clothes pin under the clothes line and from there she came to tell me "Lor, your son , your son" I told her "no, that can't be my baby , cant, so from there she said "come " and we ran to the well and when we ran to the well she saw the baby and she said the baby was there with his hands up and still blinking , my baby was still alive because he wasn't dead yet and then from there my mother in law ran to go get help and I ran for help too ,when I ran for help, a neighbor near us , we don't know how he jumped in but the same time my mother in law jumped in too and they held her and pulled her back up and the neighbor took him out , the lady and his grandfather did CPR on him and he was vomiting water and he was breathing and when I rushed him to the hospital I still did CPR and then from there when we arrived at the hospital my baby was still breathing but it looked like they didn't have enough doctors at the hospital Saturday so..."

Courtney Weatherburne
"Does he usually play around the well or...?"

Lorena Durantes, Mother, Edwin Duarte
"No he never plays around the well, we don't put him around the well."

Courtney Weatherburne
"But you guys usually have the well covered?"

Lorena Durantes, Mother, Edwin Duarte
"Yes we usually have the well covered but it's just when we wash on Saturday, nobody knew this would happen anyway."

Courtney Weatherburne
"So the baby slipped away from you all and went around the house and went to the well, you all didn't even see when the lee baby passed."

Lorena Durantes, Mother, Edwin Duarte
"No we didn't see when my son ...it was even, you can't say 10 minutes or 20 minutes because the same clothes he had one was the same clothes I put on him a while ago."

Courtney Weatherburne
"This is something that I don't know how as a mother, you can move from this, do you think you will be able to continue living , or find some peace in your heart after you have lost your baby?"

Lorena Durantes, Mother, Edwin Duarte
"No because I saw him in the well, I don't know how long it will take to come off but with me and his dad, we will can't forget about it."

Jules Vasquez, 7News
"Now I see there are a number of you all who lives here. How much sadness are you all filled with right now from the oldest to the youngest?"

Antoinette Can, Aunt - Edwin Duarte
"A lot, because we love him. He was our baby. When I was pregnant he was good to me; he hug and kiss me."

Jules Vasquez, 7News
"Anybody sees this picture of the little boy, he is so cute. What is your fondest memory of him?"

Antoinette Can, Aunt - Edwin Duarte
"I can say that he will be in our hearts."

According to the family, the well is 25 feet deep. They claim the child didn't receive any injury as he fell down the well. Durantes has 6 children, Edwin was her youngest child.
