Radisson Constructing Pier For The Long Run
posted (February 2, 2017)
The Radisson Fort George is the flagship hotel in Belize City's, while its pier is one one of the few very long piers extending out from the city's coast. And they have paid dearly for that. The pier was wrecked during both Hurricane Richard in 2010, and Hurricane Earl in 2015. And so now, the hotel has come up with a design which should withstand storms and last decades. Jim Scott, the Radisson's General Manager, told us more...

Jim Scott - Gen. Manager/CEO, Radisson Fort George Hotel
"It's going to be built back a lot stronger, a different design, slightly wider but I think the most significantly difference is it's going to be built out of cement totally and it's going to be a lot stronger that it was before which was PVC cement piles with wooden planks, wooden braces. This is going to be all cement. So it's going to be a lot stronger. It's totally built by Belizean company. One contractor and its moving along. With hurricanes there is a lot of situations where there could be damage. If it was just water surge and wave action I think Roque was real accurate, but if there was a large barge or boats that might hit it in a storm situation, sure there should be damage but this one is pretty strong. There is no wood to knock on but knock on the sea wall."

Construction on the fully cemented pier is expected to be complete around May.
