Working Man Killed In Apparent Neighborhood Dispute
posted (February 3, 2017)
And while San Pedro was reeling from that murder, in Belize City, there was less shock at a murder in the Collett area - between Raccoon and Iguana Streets. When hearing that a 29 year old man had been killed in that area - many hearing the news may have written it off as just another gang related murder. But, Mark Jones was no gangster; he was a working man probably targeted because his neighborhood is at war. His brother - the well-known footballer Floyd Jones told us how he is struggling to come to terms with the loss:...

Floyd Jones, Brother of deceased
"They took away my heart still, because he is a part of me. That's my little brother. The pain that I feel, they don't know."

"I see lots of men come on the news and a lot of them feel the pain too Mr. Jules, but it's at my doorsteps and I feel the pain now too."

Jules Vasquez reporting
The pain is all too real for this family after 29 year old Mark Jones was ambushed and killed in his own yard between Iguana and Raccoon Street Extensions on George Frazer Sr. Street at 9:00 last night:

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Public Relation
"Mark Jones was walking in his yard when a lone gunman came out from behind his house and open fire at him. We have since conducted searches in that area and one of our specialized units have come up with what we believe to be the weapon used in last night's murder. We also have a person detained that we believe could shed some light into this latest murder in Belize City."

The 29 year old had just come from picking up his girlfriend and walking her home which is his nightly routine.

Voice of Carolyn Bailey: sister of deceased
"The person that lurked him and waited for him knew his time that he is coming home, because he has one routine that he does every day."

The question now is why was he killed in such a calculating fashion:

Reporter
"Do you know why anyone would want to murder your brother?"

Voice of Carolyn Bailey: sister of deceased
"I don't know why, but I've been hearing talking and one of the neighbor's house have gotten shot up the other day and I heard rumors that the lady son said it was my brother that did it and he came out when that shooting with a towel around his waist from out his house and actually gave the police information that he saw the person ran up the street. So I don't know how could they say that my brother shot up their house."

Jules Vasquez, 7News
"We had a house shot up in that same general vicinity a week ago or 5 days ago. Is this calculated murder, you said they ambushed him, is this related to that?"

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Public Relation
"We cannot say that at this time, because it has to be treated as an isolated incident."

Floyd Jones, Brother of deceased
"The way how the scenario gone down and the way how the story gone down, it would be hard for me to believe that it is somebody from his past came back to haunt him. It has to be something new."

Mark Jones may have had troubles in his youth, but had been working for four years. At the time of his death he was employed at the Skill Training Center:

Floyd Jones, Brother of deceased
"The man really had his head on his body, even though he went through his past and his struggles. The man really was on a mission to better himself and change his life."

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Public Relation
"We cannot treat this as related to another murder. You have said it yourself, he is a working person. But not because you are a working person means that you haven't offended some member of the public. So we really have to do in-depth investigation into this murder in particular to find out what would be the motive. What would want anyone to hurt somebody who is a productive citizen?"

Police have been very present in the area - and were setting up a tent today, but at night there are no streetlights and a killer lurked in the shadows:

Floyd Jones, Brother of deceased
"At the ending of the day, I understand that back there is rough too. The war at back there is crazy. But I want to know what is his affiliation too. Why is it that they decide to take his life in our yard, in my mom's yard?"

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Public Relation
"On Tuesday of this week we had neighborhood watch meeting in that area where officer commanding eastern division south, along with about 40 residents of that area came together and they formed a neighborhood watch committee."

But all the meetings will not bring back their loved one now:

Floyd Jones, Brother of deceased
"It really hurts because, besides my mom who already gone, he is my next number one fan. Every game, he made sure he was there to support me one hundred percent and to come home on Sunday for my first home game and know that this man would not be on the bleachers cheering me on, it kinda hurt. He and I were really close. We grew up together. We had each other - that's all we have."

Voice of Carolyn Bailey: sister of deceased
"Doing a retaliation is going to prove what? It's not going to do any good for any of us. I don't have any intentions, nor any of my family members have any intention of doing any retaliation."

Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Police Public Relation
"We appeal to the general public to assist us, because Belize is so small. There is no way you can tell me that something is happening in Belize and we know that our neighbors are very interfering. They can tell you who come to your house to visit, but they cannot tell you when a crime occurs at your place. We are not blaming the public. We are asking the public, the same way that you can study your neighbor, help us to solve these crimes."

As you heard Yearwood mention, Police have detained one suspect and found what they believe is the murder weapon, which is a 9 millimeter Clock loaded with 10 live rounds. The GSU found it nearby in the Iguana Street area.
