Face Off In OW East
posted (February 3, 2017)
There's a political controversy brewing in the Louisiana area of Orange Walk East. That's the political turf of UDP Area Representative Elodio Aragon, but a large part of that division also falls within the turf of PUP Mayor Kevin Bernard. So when Aragon started some street works through the Ministry of Works, and the rains came down, Bernard was quick to pounce on him. We have both sides of that story:..

Kevin Bernard, Mayor - Orange Walk Town
"They are doing a job that is not worth what they are doing. I want to make this known clearly that I have said to our operations manager I will send a letter to the ministry of works here in Orange Walk that they must cease and desist from touching anymore street in this town."

Jules Vasquez, 7News
"You've been accused by the mayor of Orange Walk Town of calling in the ministry of works and destroying roads in that town. How do you respond?"

Hon. Elodio Aragon, OW East Representative
"What has transpired is that we had a little rain yesterday and of course roads that are not finish or completed, of course they get a little mucky. The mayor took that as an opportunity to go out there, videoed it and put it on Fiesta FM, the PUP station and lambast saying look how terrible the roads were done etc. But the roads have not been finish and a lot of people are grateful for the work I am doing."

"It's so sad to know that he as the mayor, he could have come and said Mr. Aragon, let's see what we can do together to get these roads fixed. He has never done anything like that before and it's always me who have taken up the initiative to fix all these roads the least."

Kevin Bernard, Mayor - Orange Walk Town
"Then do the right job. Put down the right material. Put down the good quality work. Not just come in there and try to cover up people's eye with wool. We need the job to be done right. If you are going to touch those streets, then do it the proper way."

Hon. Elodio Aragon, OW East Representative
"I just want the people of Orange Walk East to know that the works are continuing, we are still in the lower Louisiana area. We have gotten rollers that will work over the weekend and the rest of next week and likewise after we have finish complete with that work, we move into Louisiana proper and then to the Pasadita area."

"These are the challenges we have. We are here, we are elected representatives and I am always open to working for the betterment of the Orange Walk East Division."

Kevin Bernard, Mayor - Orange Walk Town
"If you are going to come in there and just scrape the streets and leave it there without any rolling, compaction, then you are going to create a mess and this is what they have created. The Orange Walk East Representative sent in the ministry of works to create a mess for the people of Orange Walk East."

Hon. Elodio Aragon, OW East Representative
"The rain came in yesterday morning and of course it was freshly dump material especially when you look at the road at Savanna Street. We poured material on that street. Trucks loads of material. It was spread and we had to get the roller. So the rain came and of course it's going to create a muck. Whenever we are working there are always things that we can't control. We can't control the elements out there."

Kevin Bernard, Mayor - Orange Walk Town
"As mayor, I am not going to stand here and allow anymore machinery from ministry of works to come into our town, to come into the east to just simply do the kind of work here in Orange Walk East."

Hon. Elodio Aragon, OW East Representative
"It's so sad that the mayor takes the slightest opportunity to go out there and to be negative on the whole issue and I think that we have to be bigger than that in terms of leadership, because at the end of the day, this is not about me or the mayor. This is about the people who lives within our towns."

Aragon says that the work continues and residents will soon be benefiting from upgraded streets and roads. Bernard said his council is doings its own work in the Louisiana area.
