Will Haulover Creek Be Ready for La Ruta Maya?
posted (February 8, 2017)

Last night we told you about the substantial blockage at the Haulover Creek, which is considered the final stretch of the annual La Ruta Maya canoe race. Trees uprooted from last year’s Hurricane Earl and overgrown vegetation has left the narrow channel virtually impassable, especially for a canoe. Today the Minister of State of the Environment, Omar Figueroa, gave us an update on the creek’s status and whether it will be ready for next month’s big race…

"Minister we also wanted to ask you about the Halouver Creek, the channel. We heard it's been blocked recently and it might not be cleared enough for the La Ruta Maya to pass through there. Is there any plans for the ministry to come in and intervene and help to make sure that channel is completely cleared out?"

Dr. Omar Figueroa - Minister of State, Ministry of Environment
"I received that report yesterday and I asked the chief forest officer to look into it and we sent a group of guys today out there to look at it. I haven't received a report yet but we will need to work together with guys from the Port Authority as well and other relevant departments to make sure we do what needs to be done to ensure that the race proceeds as plan."

The canoe association was hoping that the creek could be cleared by February 17th when they have a warm up race scheduled.
