Environment Minister Talks About Caye Chapel Project
posted (February 8, 2017)

In the last Senate meeting, Senator Valerie Woods told the Senate about a major tourism project that was about to begin on Caye Chapel. She also noted that the project was seemingly greenlit, without the completion of an environmental impact assessment. Environemt Minster Figueroa cleared the situation up for us today…

Alex Courtenay
"We heard in the Senate last week that a major tourism beach development was being planned and it had been cleared without the completion of an EIA. Can you speak to that and what will be looked into that or if it will be looked into?"

Dr. Omar Figueroa - Minister of State, Ministry of Environment
"Well the entire project didn't get environmental clearance; the entire project still requires an EIA to be completed. What happen this is a major investment and the developers wanted to a pilot project within the investment and so the Department of the Environment sat down with them and we developed an ECP for that particular project and one of the requirements for the ECP that the EIA for the larger project would be expedited and should be finished within the next 6 to 8 months I believe."
