GOB Met With Business Community About Budget
posted (February 9, 2017)
Will there be new taxes?

That what officials from the Ministry of Finance discussed with the Belize Chamber of Commerce and other private sector partners today in a closed door session at the Biltmore. It's the first in a series of consultations regarding the upcoming budget. They discussed strategies that could be employed to get public finances under control. Late last month, the Chamber held a conference of their own to discuss the national budget and prepare for the consultation. Chamber president, Nikita Usher told us that they would be recommending ways to balance the books without increasing taxes, but by cutting government spending.

Our news team waited outside the meeting to get a comment, but Financial Secretary Joe Waight declined. The Ministry of Finance is expected to meet with the labor unions tomorrow for further consultations.
