Mother of Two In Coma, With Bullet To Head
posted (March 7, 2017)
Tonight, a mother of two is in an induced coma at the KHMH with a bullet lodged in her brain. Doctors are hoping she can make a recovery, but at this point, it's too early to tell. 29 year old Camille Munnings was one of three persons shot early on Monday morning on the south end of Caye Caulker near the airstrip on Xocol Street. The alleged culprit was a man with a rag over his face. Just after midnight, he strode up to Raul McFarlane, Akeem Garcia and Camille Munnings and opened fire, hitting the two men to the back and leg, while the bullet grazed Munnings shoulder and ended up lodged in the back of her head. She is Akeem Garcia's common law wife.

San Pedro Police detained two suspects but may have to release them because they say the victims who are conscious, namely Garcia and McFarlane don't want to cooperate.

And while that is a police matter, all Camille Munnings' family cares about right now is that she makes it. Today, her sister asking to appear off camera told us what they know about her condition so far:...

"In terms of her injuries what can you tell us about that?"

Voice of sister: Camille Munnings
"Camille has a swollen brain, the bullet is still in her head and right now we are still waiting for doctors to read her CAT scan to tell us the injury in her head if the bullet caused any injuries or what damage it can cause down the line for future references, but right now we're still waiting. She already did the CAT scan so we're just waiting for us to update and read that to us so that we can know exactly what happen and what's going on in her head. But right now her head and brain is swollen and her face is swollen. She's in a coma at the moment."

"She's in a medically induced coma?"

Voice of sister: Camille Munnings
"Yes she's in a medically induced coma right now. But up to this point my sister is fighting for her life. She's in a critical condition right now and we are being strong for Camille because she was a strong person. She was very jovial, happy always, she was the backbone for our family. She was always there for us. She was always the strong one and just to see her lying on that bed is really hard, but at the end of the day we need to be strong for Camille because that's what she would want us to do, be strong for her, so that's what we're doing."

The family is waiting for the doctors to tell them the results of a catscan performed today.

Police say the suspects are Belize City based but are known to shuttle between the city and the Cayes. The police believe the shooting was motivated by illicit business dealings. The family had no comment. All three remain hospitalized in the KHMH. The men, Garcia and McFarlane are stable, but Camille Munnings is critical.
