Jail For Firearm

20 year-old Stephen Mejia is at the Prison tonight after being found guilty of possessing a loaded 9 millimeter pistol.

He stood trial before Magistrate Carlon Mendoza where to 2 police officers testified that on the morning of September 1, 2016, they were on mobile patrol on Dunn Street, when they saw 2 men on bicycles. The cops say that the men made a dash to escape, and according to the officer, he saw Stephen Mejia, throw a gun over a zinc fence.

They later recovered a Glock pistol, loaded with 9 live rounds.

In his defense, Mejia told the court he was innocent. He disputed that the officers saw him throw anything away.

After consideration, Magistrate Mendoza found him guilty of keeping an unlicensed firearm, and ammunition. He sentenced Mejia to 1 year in Jail.



Luz Longsworth's Ascent

Today the UWI Open Campus gets a new Chancellor. Dr. Luz Longsworth will officially be inducted as the Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal of the Open Campus of the University of the West Indies in Belize. Longsworth is the third woman to hold a position of such high standing since the Campus' inception in 2008.

Longsworth has over 25 years of experience in academia and business, and served as a director of the open campus since 2008.
