Exports and Imports Sag
posted (March 29, 2017)

And Belize’s external trade profile was also not encouraging.  Here’s the breakdown:…

Stephanie Vasquez - Statistician, SIB
"The largest changes in imports for the period were observed in the following categories. The machinery and transport equipment category which accounted for 58 million dollars of Belize's import in January to February 2017 fell by 13 million dollars as Belize imported less telecommunication equipment, 4 cylinder vehicles and agricultural equipment than it did in January to February 2016. Good destined for export processing zones which amounted to 4 million dollars for the first 2 months of this year dropped by 6 million when compared to the same period of last year going to reduced imports of gaming machines, shrimp feed and containers. The first two months of this year saw increased export earnings for 4 of Belize's major commodities; export revenue for sugar went up by 8.6 million dollars to 13.6 million an increase largely owing to last month's bulk shipment of sugar. For the period earning of banana exports rose by 6.1 million dollars to 15.1 million and beneficial agricultural practices and expanded farm acreages allowed for such an increase. Receipts of crude petroleum exports grew by 2.4 million dollars for this period despite having almost no change in exporting volumes as crude exports benefited from higher world market prices. While rising shrimp exports for the period January to February 2017 led to a 1.6 million dollar growth in the marine category. Earning from citrus exports fell by 5.8 million dollars as a smaller crop and a late crop led to citrus' slow start to 2017."
