MOFA Says IT Won't Comment On What It Hasn’t Seen
posted (March 30, 2017)
Last night we gave you the details of a leaked document from the Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We've seen the document from Breaking Belize News, and translated it ourselves. It's a progress report from a consultant, named Edmundo Rene Urrutia Garcia, the former Guatemalan Ambassador to the UK.

He was part of the planning for Guatemala's push toward the International Court of Justice. The worrying part of the report is that he participated in an analysis and recommendation on a referendum about oil exploration in the subsoil of Belize. This suggests that the Guatemalans may be entertaining ideas to conduct oil exploration in Belize. And the consultant also participated in talks for a proposal for a resolution with the inclusion of Belize into the official map of Guatemala.

It's alarming that such conversations are being had internally in Guatemala, but what does Belize's Foreign Affairs Ministry have to say? Well, nothing so far. They say they have not seen the document, and cannot make an assessment until they translate it themselves.
