There was a fire in Dangriga early this morning. Now, often, whenever there is a fire - arson is suspected since there is a disturbing trend to use arson as a form of retaliation. This home in the Benguche area of Dangriga burnt down this morning:

"So here we are, house buya, gone."

"Well like after 4 my ma wake up we, so she seh: uno come peep through the window, so when we look through the window da just inside a dih house mih dih spark up. So my ma seh: get uno documents and thing but I fraid fu fire- I fraid fu deh kinda thing so I just run outside, I da dih first person weh run outside, and I dih wake up the whole neighborhood."

"So you said it started about 4:30 am?"

"About 4:35..."

"What did you hear and see?"
Michael Flores - Neighbor
"I just hear a loud popping noise- pop, pop, pop. You know, when I jump up, when I open my doors the house was already in flames. Ain't nothing we could do. I don't know but I do believe it's arson. Somebody set this building on fire"
And he has good reason to believe that - here's a bottle of fuel we found in the yard. This was found near the back of the house, which is where the fire started. The resident of the house, Errol Gomez hadn't seen it, when we showed him, he was incredulous and outraged.

"What was your reaction when you see that somebody mih dih try bun you up inna dih house last night?"

"Well, the only thing I could seh right, I know deh got people weh at me weh wah kill me and hurt me but I just wah mek deh know that if they want come do me anything I deh right ya and thing. But fu me this dah wah eye opena and I just wah deh get dih sense that if I mi dead ih neva mih gwen like that too. You undastand, this come from my heart because my angel weh I got home, I no retaliate; because if I mih deh weh pat I come from I mih weh tek it into mih own hands, so I just thank god that my gial change my motive, you know, and how I fu deal with things; and I can't change weh done happen, this done happen."
But, now, he's lost a family home - and he says it's part of a campaign of violence against him.

"Well ih only could be people weh no like me."

"Seems there is no shortage of that."

"Well deh neva no weh got haters. They neva weh stop got haters, everywhere haters deh."

"Obviously somebody wanted you dead or, real talk, somebody mih want you burn up dead inna yo sleep."

"I just have to seh thank Jah too mein. I wake up like 4, 5, I neva know what mih dih happen- and the house smokey, I dih cough- I run out side, I mih got wah gallon a wata, try out the fire, my phone mih dih give wah lee problem- I can't connect, you know- so I end up the ride da the police station then deh tell me mek I go dah dih fire station mek I inform them, when deh come hea the house already inna gulf a flame, I can't save nothing again- that done gone."
We note that according to area residents, police had already visited the scene but did not pick up the bottle of gas.
