And the final new service that the City Council is now offering is custom license plates. If you’re tired of those regular old plates, for a premium price of $1,000, you can get plates to match your personality. The City is hoping that you will buy in and help offset a million-dollar shortfall arising from the restructuring of property taxes and trade licenses.

Here’s how the Mayor and Councillor Pitts made the sales pitch this evening: 

Darrell Bradley - Mayor, Belize City 
"We are trying to move ahead with trade license reform that will cost the City Council approximately 1 million dollars. As an initiative to recapitalize or recoup those funds the traffic department launched a very innovative program to sell personalized license plate, we'll talk about that in greater detail. We'll  launch 500 of these plates, these will be available for sale at a thousand dollars per plate and so that will make us rechargeable half of where we want to go; of course if you want your regular plate, that is available to you but many people in our community have expressed an interest interpretation buying personalized plates- so my plate may say "Go Mayor", other people may use their name or other parts, and we are pricing this at a thousand dollars that will allow the city council to generate an additional 500 thousand dollars in revenue."

"The personalizing of license plate the cost is optional to anybody that wants to buy the service. It's $1,000 for personalized license plates- of course, you will get it by the pair. And this is for those who would want to...of course you'd have to be respectful with your name and wording and so on. This is what it would look like. If you want to just put your name, if you want to put maybe your spouse's name or child's name, but this will be recorded and will be affixed to your vehicle, your VIN, and your registration.  The new license plates for Belize City will look like this. Of course, each municipality are identified by their plates: Dangriga has a nice plate, Orange Walk, Cayo, Belmopan; this is Belize City's one. And this is showcasing our new city brand logo which is basically this right here."

These custom plates are now available for purchase, and if you have a name in mind that may be common, you’ll want to get yours quickly because each custom plate’s wording will only be printed and sold to 1 owner. There will be no duplication, and that way the custom plates will remain unique.
