Mexicans Mad At Free Zone Fee
posted (April 5, 2017)

One of the new revenue raising budget measures is an increase in the social fee at the Commercial Free Zone in Corozal.

And now, reports in the Mexican press say that the cost for Mexicans to enter the Commercial Free Zone has increased by 50%, from 10 Mexican pesos to 15 Mexican pesos - which is about one dollar and 50 cents.

It may not seem like a whole lot, but the Mexicans aren't happy and are threatening to boycott the zone. A report published online on El Quintana Roo.com notes that the Zone already depends totally on business from Mexicans, so the increase in the cost to access the Zone came as a surprise. As they put it, [quote] “Now we have to pay more to spend our money thereâ€￾.

The report notes that on a daily basis up to 500 vehicles enter the Zone to shop - and during the busy season that number increases by 5.
