22 year-old Paul Smith is at the Belize Central Prison tonight where he will remain for an entire month, all because he had a little over one ounce of marijuana.
Police say that they busted the Radisson employee with the weed this morning, when they went to his house on Antelope Street Extension. They were searching for gun and drugs, and when they asked him if he had anything to declare, he 'fessed up and told them that he had a small amount of cannabis.
He asked them to give him a run, but instead, the officers arrested and charged him for it.
He pleaded guilty to the charges figuring that he would have to pay a fine for the conviction, but the Chief Magistrate, Ann Marie Smith, wasn't so accommodating.
A check of their records show that he owed the court 155 dollars, and so the Chief Magistrate sentenced him to spend 1 month in jail due to the outstanding fine. Court reports say that he had a look of disbelief when the Chief Magistrate informed him of her decision.
