With a price tag of 32 million dollars, The Civic Center project is the most expensive public project in Belize's history. And it is nearing completion. Today's Guardian reports that it will be opened in December of this year.
The seating capacity for sporting events will be 4,500 persons, but as a hurricane shelter it can accommodate as many as 7 thousand persons. It is designed to withstand hurricane force winds with gusts of up to 145 miles per hour.
Inside the building there will be a FIBA certified basketball court which will double as three practice courts and most importantly the building is fully insulated and will have a fully functioning air conditioning system.
