Another day, Another Fire
posted (May 12, 2017)
Today another fire has left two Belize City families without a home. At around 1:00 this afternoon, a fire started in a shared town house on Quellos' Alley off New New Road. The Fire Department quickly responded and got the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings. We spoke to Melony Bowen, one of the residents of the town house who was at work when the fire started. She told us what she knows...

Melony Bowen, Fire Victim
"I don't even have an idea what happened, because I was at work. I work at Social Security Board and at the time I was sitting at the table and the receptionist said "Mel you have a call, its very urgent." I told her to put the call to the other desk, said that there is a fire at my house and I said no, how could there be a fire. I left my house good this morning and my kids were there. So I left work and this is what I saw my house burnt."

"Talk to us about what you lost as a result of this fire?"

Melony Bowen, Fire Victim
"Basically my clothes, bed mattress, I just got my groceries and I lost all of that for the baby and some other stuff, but I need to actually go in and asses what I lost or what got burnt or wet. My sofas got wt because it's a split-level house. It's actually a townhouse. My neighbor lives at the back and I lives at the front."

Reporter
"Did you manage to rake out anything?"

Melony Bowen, Fire Victim
"I couldn't take out anything, I think my neighbors took out some of the stuff, but I don't know until I go and check what is there."

The Fire Department is still investigating the origins of the fire. No one was injured, but Bowen and her family lost a large portion of their possessions in the fire. If anyone would like to provide any assistance, they can contact Bowen at 623-1358, or her mother at 6501093.
