The Church State Commission on Public Morality was formed in September of 2016, and the churches are expected to present their position paper to the Government later this week. But, sources tell us that all is not well on the Church side of the Commission. That's because both the President of the Council of Churches, who is Bishop Roosevelt Papouloute, and the representative of the Anglican Church, Bishop Phillip Wright, have withdrawn from the church group.
While no official explanation has been given, sources close to us suggest that the Bishops felt that the views of their churches were not being adequately represented in the final position paper. And so, rather than be an under-represented minority in positions they did not support, the two decided to step back.
Still, the final position paper will be put forward to the Chairman, Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber later this week.
It seems there has been some friction between these traditional churches and the Evangelical groups. As we understand it, the Catholic church remains in the group.
From here it it is left to be seen if Deputy PM Faber accepts it, since the Council of Churches President and Vice President have stepped aside.
The Church State Commission was created to advise the government on matters of public morality after the government agreed to appeal the Supreme Court judgement de-criminalising sodomy between consenting adults.
