Large Mound Looted In Louisville
posted (June 9, 2017)
The Institute of Archaeology is reporting that a minor mayan site in the Corozal District has been ruthlessly looted. It's a large mound in Louisville Village where thieves have raided the site to get to the cut limestone blocks which they then sell to area residents. They also steal black soil form the area. NICH has been monitoring it for some months, and every time they visit, the site is closer and closer to being destroyed.

Archaeologist Josue Ramos told us more via phone:..

Voice of: Josue Ramos, Archaeologist - NICH
"We have been monitoring the situation since March. Every time we go back we see that the individuals keep on removing dirt and also the cut stones and we have reach to the point where we saw the wall, so the reason for the report was to make the people from Corozal and surrounding villages aware and not to be purchasing stones from the site. All we are asking is for the assistance to call the institute of archaeology office or the nearest police station so we can hopefully apprehend which is a criminal act to be looting."

NICH is pleading with the public, especially those in the Louisville, San Narciso and San Roman areas, to be wary of who they are buying black soil and limestone from. And, if you notice cut stone blocks, please call the Institute of Archaeology at 822-2106 or the police.
