A Belizean Wins Texas Safari
posted (June 12, 2017)
Canoeing enthusiasts out of the Cayo District are reporting tonight that Belizean Hener Cruz, a resident of Esperanza Village, has teamed up with an American to win the 2017 Texas Safari.

It's a canoeing race held down the entire stretch of the water ways from San Marcos, Texas to the US City of Seadrift. That's an impressive 262 miles of paddling, which started back in 1963, and has now become an annual event.

This year, Belizean Hener Cruz and American Kyle Mynar were the first, in the USCA C2 Class, to cross the finish line. Their total time was 39 hours and 29 minutes.

Our colleagues from Can Network were out in Texas for the race, and here's a report from broadcaster Rhonda Crichton-Gentle on the race:

The canoe fans in Belize say that those who take part in the Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge are always strong competitors in the race. The last Belizean to win the race did so in 1997.
