Southside’s Respite From Gang Violence
posted (June 14, 2017)

Today we caught up both Southside and Northside police on their weekly meet and greet rounds. We start off with Southside. Now as you have surely noticed, there has been a significant decrease in gang related crimes on the Southside. It is a much needed reprieve from all the violence. ACP Chester Williams told us how grateful the Southside residents are for this break.

ACP Chester Williams - OC, Eastern South Division
"We're in the Pen Road extension area and we have spoken to many residence in this part of the city and again the sentiment from them is a positive one in the sense that they are happy, they are satisfied with the work of the police in this area and they are also satisfied with the crime situation in their area. The salient thing from them is that we see the police every minute and that is excellent. Few complaints, some of them talk about children still on the street after hours, that is an area we need to improve on and so we will be sending the message to our patrol officers to ensure that the curfew law continued to be enforced, it is still there, we have not backed up off from it, we believe enforcing is a good thing and we cannot stop at this time; so all in all everything is okay in this area of Belize City."

"Sir can you give us an update on the curfew law, have you have detained or charge any parents recently or have seen an increase of kids running around late at night?"

ACP Chester Williams
"Well we have indeed charged some parents recently for having their unsupervised child on the street after hours and that continue. We continue to echo to our police officers to ensure they enforce the law but again sometimes the police officers are too complacent and some of them running away from work and because of that they are not charging as much as we should but all in all I think that some parents are still taking heed to the warning and the amount of children on our streets after hours have been minimized significantly compared to before."
