Today there was a tragic accident in Santa Cruz Village - which is in the Orange Walk district. That's one of the hotspots for smuggling across the Rio Hondo River because it is right across from Botes in Mexico. This afternoon, 69 year old Froyland Peralta was by the riverside when it appears he put his Ford Ranger in the wrong gear, so instead of driving away from the river, he reversed into it. That's when his vehicle plunged into the river. Peralta drowned and his body was found in the pan of the pickup truck. His passenger who is hearing impaired managed to survive.
Repots say he had just come across from Botes.
